DIY tips

  • 01

EJ-series engines (pre-2020 non-turbo): change oil every 5,000 miles with synthetic — head gasket issues are often traced to deferred maintenance.

  • 02

The FB-series engine (2020+ Outback) is far more reliable and can safely use 10,000-mile oil intervals with synthetic.

  • 03

Subaru-specific coolant (HOAT type) is required — do not mix green or universal coolant.

  • 04

All-wheel-drive requires all four tires within 2/32″ of tread depth — mismatched tires damage the rear differential.

Reliability snapshot

2020+ Outback with the FA24 engine is dramatically more reliable. Earlier EJ models need strict coolant and oil discipline to avoid head gasket failure.
